In western Uganda lies Kibale National Park, known for its rich biodiversity made up of both plants and animals. Primate families fill the forest, with over 13 species attracting many tourists who come to see the beauty of Kibale.
Chimpanzees take up a large part of the forest, and because of their large number, the park is known as the capital of primates.
There are also many monkey species that bring life to the environment, including red colobus monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, olive baboons, and grey-cheeked mangabeys. To help visitors enjoy the experience, chimpanzee trekking was introduced.
To take part, you must be 15 years or older and have a paid permit from the Uganda Wildlife Authority. This rule still applies today.
Birds add beauty to the park with their songs as they fly from one place to another. That is why park operators call it a bird’s paradise.
The park is home to over 375 bird species, including the African grey parrot, African emerald cuckoo, and yellow-rumped tinkerbird. Bird watching is done with the help of a guide who knows the area well and will remind you to keep quiet because loud noise can scare the birds away and make it hard to see them.
Along the way, you may see mammals searching for food and water, such as forest elephants, buffaloes, bush pigs, duikers, giant forest hogs, and meat-eating animals like civets and mongooses. Some of these animals may be hard to spot, but with the help of a tour guide and good luck, you might see them.
Reptiles and amphibians are also part of the park’s biodiversity. These include the Gaboon viper, forest cobra, and green mamba. These snakes move on the ground and have venom that can be deadly if not treated quickly.
At night, you will hear frogs making loud sounds, joined by toads, showing that the park is always full of life.
The plant life, or flora, covers the park with a tropical rainforest made up of many tall trees that create a beautiful sight even at the park entrance. These trees provide homes for many animals, including butterflies and insects such as swallowtails, charaxes, and skippers.
The rich biodiversity extends to areas like the Bigodi Wetlands Sanctuary, where visitors can explore even more unique species in their natural habitat.
