Exploring the Ndali-Kasenda Crater Lakes in Kibale National Park

The Ndali-Kasenda Crater Lakes get their name from the Ndali-Kasenda area where they are found. These lakes are believed to have formed as a result of a violent volcanic eruption that happened about 8,000 to 10,000 years ago.

This eruption created over 60 crater lakes—some with fresh water, others dry with just a depression, and some filled with volcanic gases and green-colored water that is not safe for human use.

Ndali-Kasenda is a natural wonder that attracts many visitors from around the world, especially photographers who enjoy capturing nature. You will not only see clear waters but also colorful birds flying by to drink or enjoy the fresh air in the area.

Some of the lakes you may see include Lake Nyabikere, which is 11 km off the Fort Portal road. It is locally called the “lake of frogs” because it offers a good home to many of them.

Lake Nkuruba, which is known for its walking tours, is 25 km south of Fort Portal. It leads to Mahoma Falls and also to a viewpoint known as “Top of the World.”

If you want to explore more, you can stay at the Lake Nkuruba Nature Reserve & Campsite and enjoy the cool morning air as you get ready for more adventures.

Other lakes include Lake Kifuruka, Lake Nyinambuga (which is south of Lake Nkuruba), Lake Ntambi, Lake Lyantonde, Lake Nyamasagani, Lake Mubiro, and many others.

Lake Nyinambuga is known for its blue waters and the forest around it. Because of its beauty, it appears on the 20,000 UGX note.

To get a good view of the area, you can hike to a nearby mountain top, sit, and relax as you look at all the land below.

The way these lakes were formed is interesting. It is said that the eruptions were so strong that they blew off the land surface, leaving deep holes that later filled with water from rivers or rain over time.

You can further explore some of the lakes by fishing or swimming, but be careful. Some depressions have a strong smell of sulphur and green water, which is not safe. Do not drink or swim in those.
