Amabere Ga Nyina Mwiru Caves – Exploring Uganda’s Cultural & Natural Landmark

Amabere Caves is one of the historical caves you should not miss visiting. They are located seven kilometers away from Fort Portal town in western Uganda, standing between a few streams, waterfalls, and volcanoes. The caves are close to Mountain Rwenzori, giving a beautiful view all around to visitors.

During your visit to the Amabere Caves, you will be assigned a tour guide to take you through the history of the caves.

Some tourists ask why it is called “the breasts of Mwiru’s mother.” It is said that a long time ago, the Chwezi dynasty leader lived in this place, and if you want to hear the full story, visit the area in person where you will learn about King Bukuku, his daughter, and Nyina Mwiru’s son, Ndahura. While in the region, you can also explore the nearby Tooro Botanical Gardens for a nature experience.

A short version of the story is that King Bukuku wanted his daughter’s breasts to be cut off to make her less attractive to men, but the plan failed. The king then decided to hide her in the cave, but because she was still attractive, she became pregnant by the Batembuzi king Isaza and later gave birth to a son called Ndahura.

Since she could not feed the baby herself, she used what looked like milk dripping from the stalactites. It looked like milk because of the calcium in it. Later, Ndahura fulfilled a prophecy and became king, taking over Bukuku’s throne, which rightfully belonged to Isaza.

It is said that Ndahura went on to form one of the great empires in the Great Lakes Area of Africa.

The caves are also called Nyakasura Caves because they are located near Nyakasura Falls. They are not just caves but look more like a large rock overhang.

Visitors can hire a self-drive car to reach the area. Once there, you can stand behind the waterfall or even swim in the small pool, which attracts colobus monkeys due to the cool and icy water, making your trip even more enjoyable.

According to park records, the fees have increased. Non-residents now pay an additional amount, which includes the services of a guide who will escort you.

Within thirty minutes of walking, the guide will share stories about the ancient legends to make your visit worthwhile.

You can also camp nearby since there is a camping site close to the caves. You are advised to use a flashlight to capture clear photos because the place becomes darker as you go deeper into the cave.

Besides Amabere Caves, you can also visit the nearby crater lakes for a more beautiful adventure.
