March begins the rainy season, making the land wet, but the showers are not as heavy as in April. This makes it possible to enter the jungle with some comfort. Some tourists do not like the rainy season because of the muddy ground, but it has a big advantage — it is cheaper and also gives you a better chance to see chimpanzees.
This happens because there are many fruits during this season, which makes chimpanzees easier to spot.
To take part in chimpanzee trekking, you must make sure you do not have airborne diseases such as cough or flu. This is done to protect the chimpanzees, as they are very sensitive. If you need to use the toilet while in the jungle, you are advised to move away from the group, dig a hole, and cover it after use.
This activity is very sensitive, and children below 15 years are not allowed. This is because they might forget the rules. Instead, children have their own activities that help them enjoy nature and learn about art.
Chimpanzee trekking permits cost USD 250 per person for foreign non-residents, USD 200 for foreign residents, and 180,000 Uganda shillings for East African citizens.
Besides chimpanzee trekking, you can also enjoy bird watching since the park has many types of birds. Keep as quiet as possible so you don’t scare them away.
Make sure to pack warm clothes because the nights are usually cold. Jackets and gumboots are very helpful, especially when walking through muddy areas.
Do not forget a first aid kit, and make sure you know how to use it. Snacks and a drink can help with hunger before you return to your lodge for lunch. Avoid throwing rubbish in the park, as wild animals might eat it, which can lead to their death.
Respect everyone you meet, and if you want to do any filming or photography, please ask for permission first. Tipping is not required in Kibale, but if you feel happy with the service and the effort of the staff, you are free to give a tip.
Try to exchange your dollar notes into small notes or Uganda shillings, as some people may not know how to convert foreign currency. Either way, they will always remember your kindness.
March is a great month to visit Kibale. Do not miss this opportunity.
