Top Activities in Kibale National Park – Chimpanze Trekking, Bird Watching & Cultural Tours

Searching for the top things to do in Kibale? First experiences can be challenging, but they are the first step toward progress in Kibale National Park. Feel free to take part in any of these top activities in Kibale National Park to enjoy nature. These include:

Chimpanzee Habituation Experience (CHEX)

The chimpanzee habituation experience (CHEX) is one of the most popular things to do in Kibale National Park, even though it costs more. It starts early in the morning with a short briefing about the rules and what to do when you see the chimpanzees.

The briefing is done at the park headquarters at Kanyanchu Visitor Centre. Habituation is very interesting because you spend up to four hours in the forest watching how chimpanzees feed, protect themselves, and care for their young ones as they adapt to human presence.

Chimpanzee Trekking

Chimpanzee trekking brings many tourists to Kibale. Because of this, the park has two shifts: the morning shift and the afternoon shift.

The first shift starts at 8:00 a.m. with a briefing. After that, you go into the forest to begin trekking. The trek can take 2 to 5 hours, depending on where the chimpanzees are, as they move around looking for food.

Once you find them, you can record videos and take photos to keep your memories of the forest.

Birding

Kibale is home to 370 bird species, including forest birds, migratory birds, and Albertine Rift endemics. Bird watching is led by a birding guide who will help you spot the birds you want to see.

Some of these include the red-faced woodland warbler, green-breasted pitta, purple-breasted sunbird, dusky crimsonwing, Nahan’s francolin, Cassin’s spinetail, black bee-eater, papyrus canary, black-headed gonolek, papyrus gonolek, white-collared oliveback, cinnamon-chested bee-eater, slender-billed weaver, and many others.

Birds are very sensitive, so you must stay quiet and avoid loud noise, or they may fly away and you might miss the activity.

Community Visits

If you want to meet local tribes & people, cultural visits are a great choice. You will talk to many people and learn about their way of life, history, and schools. They may even prepare local food for you to show love and welcome.

Local dances are performed as part of the welcome, and as you sit and relax, you will also see beautiful handmade crafts.

Night Forest Walks

Just like trekking and habituation, night forest walks start with a briefing at around 7:00 p.m. at the headquarters. Armed rangers will guide you to make sure you are safe.

You will walk with torches so you can clearly see the night animals like serval cats, civets, tree hyraxes, nightjars, and many others.

Prepare all the necessary safari essentials for an amazing trip.
