Chimpanzee trekking is a challenging activity. Some days are good for trekking and others are not, which is why you are advised to pack important items that will support your journey. These include:
- Garden gloves: Trekking is done deep in the tropical rainforest, which is filled with different plants, including itchy and thorny ones. Gloves are important to protect your hands and skin from scratches and irritations.
- Hiking boots: The journey involves walking for a long time in search of chimpanzees, which can make your feet tired. Hiking boots protect your feet from fire ants and keep them dry during the rainy season. They are strong enough to prevent mud from entering, so make sure you carry them before heading to any national park in Uganda.
- Long-sleeved shirt and trousers: As a trekker, you may have to wake up very early, especially for the morning session. At that time, it is usually cold because you are near the rain-forest. You need to wear long-sleeved shirts and trousers to keep warm and also protect your skin from thorny trees and insects.
- Waterproof rain jackets: Waterproof rain jackets are very helpful during the rainy season. They protect you from getting wet if it rains while trekking. It is better to carry a light rain jacket so it does not make you tired as you walk to where the chimpanzees are.
- Insect repellent: Chimpanzee trekking is done in Kibale National Park, Budongo Forest, and Queen Elizabeth National Park. Outside Uganda, it is also done in Nyungwe National Park in Rwanda. All these places are known for insects like mosquitoes. Insect repellent helps prevent bites and gives you a more comfortable experience.
- Energy snacks and water bottles: Water bottles help you stay hydrated because walking for long hours makes you lose water. This can also make you feel hungry, so it is important to carry snacks and water from your lodge before setting off.
- A pair of binoculars and a camera: Some species cannot be seen up close because they are very sensitive. You will need binoculars to view them from a distance. If you want to keep memories of the chimpanzees and other wild animals, carry a camera and remember to pack extra batteries. These tools not only enhance your experience but also help you stay focused on safe wildlife viewing.
- Sunglasses, hat, and walking stick: During the dry season, there is a lot of sunlight and wind. Sunglasses and a hat will help protect your eyes and head. While trekking, you may get tired. A walking stick can support you when you feel like you cannot go any further.
