The Kibale National Park area is large, meaning there are many places where you, your family, or your friends can enjoy a walk.
Some of these include the Bigodi Swamp Walk, a walk to the Amabere Ga Nyina Mwiru Caves, or even a hike to the Top of the World.
Nature walks go hand in hand with many activities such as:
Bird-watching
Bird lovers usually enjoy walking through peaceful areas of the park, guided by the sounds of chirping birds. Tour guides often accompany visitors to keep them safe.
As you walk, you may see some of the 370 bird species that live in the park, such as the double-toothed barbet, red-fronted tinkerbird, blue-breasted kingfisher, and great blue turaco, among others.
Primate Hiking
Walking to see the primates is one of the best experiences. The hike begins in the morning, especially if you want to see chimpanzees leaving their nests or feeding their young.
Park guides lead the walk into the rain-forest, where you may see at least 13 different primates such as olive baboons, Uganda mangabeys, Uganda red-tailed monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, vervets, and black-and-white colobus monkeys.
Keep in mind that Kibale has both rainy and sunny seasons. So before starting your journey, you are advised to pack the essentials you will need.
Morning hikes start very early to catch chimpanzees as they wake up at 6:00 a.m. For those who miss the morning walk, there are also afternoon hikes that start from Kanyanchu Visitor Centre.
These hikes are limited to four visitors to avoid disturbing the chimpanzees.
Day & Night Walks
Nature walks are special because they benefit both people and animals. To give everyone a chance to enjoy the walk, they are arranged in shifts—morning and night—to suit all visitors.
During night walks, you may spot nocturnal animals like bush babies and pottos. The sky is bright, and the sounds from frogs and trees add to the feeling of being in nature.
Many visitors prefer to camp so they can keep listening to nature’s sounds and stories.
