Kibale National Park has grown a lot since 1993. It is home to many primates, supporting chimpanzee research projects and protecting other species like birds, especially those that live in forest areas. To enjoy your visit fully, follow these tips and advice.
What to Pack During a Kibale Tour
Pack according to the season. During the dry season, bring sunglasses and a hat to protect yourself from the hot sun. There will be little or no rain, so wear long-sleeved shirts and trousers to protect your body from itchy plant leaves.
Snacks and drinks are very important, especially when going deep into the forest where there are no shops. They help restore your energy for the trail.
In the wet season, carry a rain jacket to stay dry and a warm sweater, as the nights are cold. Other useful items include insect repellent, a backpack, gardening gloves, and a first aid kit.
Make sure you know how to use the items in the kit or at least have some basic knowledge about them.
Where to Stay
The park has many lodges in different areas. Some of these include Crater Safari Lodge, Primate Lodge, Kibale Forest Camp, Turaco Treetops, Isunga Lodge, Kibale Safari Lodge, Chimpundu Safari Lodge, and Chimpanzee Guest House.
These lodges range from luxury to budget-friendly and can suit all types of travelers.
Activities to Do in Kibale National Park
Kibale offers many activities. The most popular is chimpanzee trekking, where you hike into the forest to search for chimpanzees. This activity is one of the main reasons Kibale is well known.
You are advised to book early so you don’t miss out. Only visitors aged 15 years and above can join, and you must have a permit issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
Bird watching is another activity, with over 350 bird species in the park. Some of these include the great blue turaco, tropical boubou, dusky crimsonwing, superb sunbirds, slender-billed weavers, and black-billed turaco.
Guided nature walks are also available, where you can see reptiles, mammals, amphibians, and butterflies along different trails in the park. Always follow the park rules for a safe and enjoyable trip.
Best Season to Visit
The park is open all year, but most visitors prefer the dry season because the trails are clear and not muddy. During this time, prices are higher because it is the peak season.
The wet season is considered the low season, with fewer visitors and lower prices, but you may face rain and muddy paths.
You are advised to prepare early before coming to Kibale National Park.
