Chimpanzee Trekking Permits in Kibale – Prices, Booking & Guidelines

Permits are proof of payment, which is why to access any activity at Kibale National Park, you must have this document. Chimpanzee permits are booked through the Uganda Wildlife Authority, but the process begins with your chosen trusted tour company.

You should provide information about the date you would like to trek. The permits from the authority are mainly for Kibale and Kyambura Gorge.

After booking with the tour operator, he or she will contact the Uganda Wildlife Authority to check the availability of chimpanzee permits based on the dates you provided.

Once it is confirmed that the permits are available, the operator will inform you and secure the dates for trekking.

Chimpanzees live in communities, and each community has about 150 individuals. During the day, they separate into smaller groups to make it easier to find food, but at night they rejoin as one family and build nests to sleep in.

Only eight people are allowed to join each trek, which lasts for 4 to 5 hours. If you want to spend more time with these animals, you can join the habituation process. You will need a different permit for that.

Habituation is the process of helping chimpanzees get used to human presence, which takes over three years, and visitors can spend the whole day with the chimps during this activity.

There are other places where chimpanzee trekking is done. These include Budongo Forest in Murchison Falls National Park, Kyambura Gorge, and Kalinzu Forest in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Outside Uganda, chimpanzee trekking is done at Nyungwe National Park in Rwanda and Gombe National Park in Tanzania.

Chimpanzee permits in Uganda are cheaper compared to gorilla permits. The prices of the chimpanzee permits depend on the type of permit and nationality.

In Kibale National Park, chimpanzee trekking permits cost 250 USD per person. In Kyambura Gorge, chimpanzee permits are priced lower and cost 100 USD. In Budongo Forest, permits are charged at 130 USD per person.

This activity in Uganda is only for people aged 15 years and above. It is done in two shifts: the morning and afternoon shifts.
