From west to east, Kibale stretches across the districts of Kabarole, Kamwenge, Kyenjojo, and Kasese. The area has green hills and is home to 13 species of chimpanzees, butterflies, insects, reptiles, different plant species, mammals, and more.
To enjoy your visit, you should plan your trip early with a trusted tour company.
The journey begins from Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. The fastest route goes through Mityana, then continues on the Mubende–Fort Portal highway. Another option is to use the Masaka–Mbarara–Kamwenge or Mbarara–Ibanda–Kamwenge route. If you are using public transport, there is a daily bus from Kampala to Fort Portal.
Once you arrive in Uganda, take the northern route, which is short and quick. It is a 300 km tarmac road from Kampala to Fort Portal, followed by 36 km to Kanyanchu Visitor Centre. This centre is about 10 km from the park headquarters. The roads are fully tarmacked, which makes travel easier.
Besides road transport, many visitors with a luxury budget use air transport. There are airstrips available for this, including Nyakisharara Airstrip in Mbarara, which is 98 km from Kanyanchu through Kamwenge, and Kasese Airstrip, which is 75 km from Fort Portal town. Some flights also take off from Kajjansi Airstrip.
Note that there are no direct scheduled flights to Kibale National Park. You will still need to use road transport from the nearest town, such as Kasese, which is served by scheduled AeroLink flights. All domestic flights are usually arranged by your tour operator.
Whether you travel by road or air, make sure you carry all necessary documents and items for your trip. These include valid passports, permits, safari shoes, long-sleeved clothes, snacks, a water bottle, a hat, sunglasses, sweaters, rain jackets, insect repellent, and small-dollar bills if you wish to give a tip.
Before traveling, check the condition of the vehicle you plan to use to avoid problems or accidents. Also, make sure to follow all road signs along the way.
