Tipping Guide for Kibale National Park – Appreciating Guides, Porters & Staff

During a Kibale tour, tipping your guide is not a must, but it is a kind way to show appreciation for the good service and effort made to make you feel comfortable.

A tip means a lot to the guides, and they often use it to support local communities around the park. This helps improve their lives and supports sustainable tourism and wildlife conservation.

Guides usually lead treks to different parts of Kibale, showing you various plants and animals. They often spend the whole day with you in the forest, together with three security staff who are paid by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Giving a tip at the end of the day brings them joy.

The guides usually share the $40 tip among themselves, and it is handed to the lead guide in the presence of the whole team. These guides face many risks to keep you safe. Some of them take part in habituation work, helping primates get used to human presence.

There have been cases where chimpanzees attacked guides, causing serious injuries like losing an eye, an arm, or getting deep scars. This is why they truly deserve appreciation for the hard work they do.

To prepare for your trip, ensure you have accurate information on exchanging money to local currency for tips and other purchases.

Guides also lead you through activities like bird watching, camping, star gazing, nature walks, and community visits. Sometimes, they even stay close to your accommodation to make sure everything goes well.

You can also tip porters. Even though they are hired at a minimum fee of $20 from the park headquarters, giving them an extra $5 to $10 is a good way to thank them for their help.

There are also driver-guides who take you around the park in a 4×4 safari car. Tipping them is also a kind gesture, though it is not required.

Some websites suggest tipping in Uganda shillings, but U.S. dollars can also be used if you break them into small notes. Most guides are used to foreign currency, so tipping them in dollars is fine.

However, local restaurant workers may find it hard to change dollars into shillings, so it is better to tip them in Uganda shillings. A giving hand is a happy hand.
