Isunga Cultural Community Experiences in Kibale National Park

A bridge of understanding begins at Isunga Cultural Community, a craft store located in Kibale National Park, filled with real cultural experiences. After enjoying chimpanzee trekking, you can walk down to Isunga Community and meet local artisans who will show you their handmade crafts such as dolls, bags, baskets, and pots, to mention a few.

By the time you leave, you may even know how to make one of the crafts yourself.

To show the people at home that you visited Africa, you can buy some of the beautiful items that reflect Uganda’s art. The people who live in this community are mostly Bakiga and Batoro. If you hear local pet names, just listen and enjoy the stories for a memorable experience.

The local people are not only friendly but also have good knowledge of tourism. They can guide you around the nearby crater lakes, springs, forests, swamps, and show you different bird species such as the cardinal woodpecker, red-chested cuckoo, Diederik cuckoo, great blue turaco, and many others.

One of the most enjoyable parts of the visit is the food. You cannot visit Isunga Community and miss the chance to taste the local dishes. You will take part in helping to prepare the food, which is both fun and educational. Music and dance will also be part of the visit as you sit and listen to the elders share their stories.

The community offers more services such as homestays, camping, nature walks, biking, Boda Boda tours, canoeing, and many more.

To help visitors understand the land better, knowledgeable tour guides lead nature walks before reaching the village. Along the way, they explain the local plants and how they are used by the people. Some leaves are not safe to touch, as they may be used for food or medicine, so always follow the guide’s advice.

The trail is a bit challenging and better for those who are physically fit. You may see wild animals along the way, but do not be afraid—the guides will tell you what to do to stay safe.

Pack some snacks and water to keep your energy up, since even at the village you may not want to sit down. You’ll be busy talking to people and learning how they live in deep rural areas.

The community is open to all visitors from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Be flexible like a reed and visit Kibale for the Isunga Cultural Community tour.
