Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale National Park – Experience Uganda’s Primate Capital

Kibale Forest was once ranked as the best place in the world for chimpanzee trekking, which is the second most popular tourist activity in Uganda after mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

A large number of visitors come here every year to see these common chimpanzees. The treks happen in the morning and afternoon and are guided by park rangers who help you find where the chimps are staying in the rain-forest.

The wet season is usually hard because it comes with rain and mud, but every good experience has some challenges. That is why you are advised to pack raincoats and gumboots to keep dry and clean.

The wet season is also helpful because it brings a lot of food, which makes the chimpanzees come down from the trees to eat. This gives visitors a good chance to see many chimpanzees.

The dry season is hot but without mud, which makes it easier to walk and see clearly in the forest. The tour guides help by following the signs and tracks of the chimps to find them.

Before chimpanzees are made available for trekking, the park staff first habituate to get used to people. This process is called chimpanzee habituation, and it is done every day.

It can take up to two years for the chimps to fully get used to human presence.
