Visiting Kibale National Park in January – Optimal Conditions for Chimpanzee Trekking & Bird Watching

Dry forest trails in January make it easy to spot different animal species, including chimpanzees that come to the ground to look for insects, wildflowers, and plants. January is a hot month in Uganda.

On your way, carry as many bottles of clean drinking water as possible to help you throughout the journey. Avoid drinking unpacked water, as some of it may not be boiled.

Because of the high temperatures, pack light-colored clothes that will not absorb heat. Dark clothes, like black, can make you feel hotter and uncomfortable.

Keep your documents close in case you are stopped by a traffic officer. Also, avoid showing your money in public, as not everyone is your friend.

Before leaving your home country, make sure to visit a medical worker to check if you are fit to travel. If not, move with your prescribed medication.

In January, temperatures can reach up to 27°C during the day, then drop to around 17°C in the afternoon and at night. These conditions attract many tourists to Kibale National Park, where the clear weather makes it easier to see animals.

The park offers many activities during this time, such as bird watching. While bird-watching, keep quiet so you don’t scare the birds away. After that, you may go into the forest for chimpanzee trekking. The morning shift starts early so you can see chimpanzees looking for food, taking care of their young ones, and more.

After a long walk, you can rest and enjoy lunch, then continue with a nature walk. You can either stay in the park to observe mammals and reptiles or go to the nearby villages to learn about local life.

To spend more time in the jungle, most tourists choose chimpanzee habituation. This is a process where park staff help primates get used to humans, and it can take almost three years.

Children below 15 years are not allowed to take part, but to keep them busy, they join other activities like butterfly spotting, nature walks, or visiting the Primate Lodge.

There are two main dry seasons in the year. One is from December to February, and the other is from June to July.

Book early to allow proper planning.
