Besides Kanyanchu Centre, Buraiga Sector is another special area in the heart of Kibale National Park. It is filled with chimpanzees, red colobus monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, black and white colobus, birds, butterflies, tropical rainforest canopy, mammals, wild animals, and many more.
If you are interested in chimpanzee trekking or habituation, you are required to pay a fee of $250 per person for trekking.
Chimpanzee habituation costs $300 because more time is spent with the chimpanzees. Buraiga Sector is a good place for this because it is less crowded. Chimpanzee habituation is the process of helping chimpanzees get used to humans before regular trekking begins. This takes a lot of effort and may take several years.
If you want to see chimpanzees feeding, try this activity. They mainly eat fruits, but also eat insects, flowers, leaves, and sometimes hunt other animals.
Chimpanzees are said to be even stronger than humans and can walk upright for nearly a kilometer. That is why you must follow the rules and regulations before starting your trek in Buraiga Sector.
Where you stay depends on your budget, which can be luxury, moderate, or budget.
Luxury:
Moderate:
- Kibale Forest Lodge
- Isunga Lodge
- Chimpanzee Forest Lodge
- Kibale Tourist Safari Lodge
- Turaco Treetop Lodge
Budget:
- Kibale Forest Lodge
- Kibale Forest Camp Lazy Camping
Note that wild animals in Buraiga Sector are very sensitive to noise. Loud noise or music is not allowed because it may scare away the birds or animals you came to see.
If you are going for chimpanzee trekking, check your camera for flash. Cameras with flash are not allowed as they can scare the chimpanzees.
Chimpanzees share almost the same DNA as humans, but even though they seem like our close relatives, do not mimic them. They may become aggressive.
During your visit to Buraiga gate and Sector, carry comfortable hiking boots to protect you from mud or dust, a rain jacket if visiting in the rainy season, drinking water, and snacks to stay fresh during the trek.
If you need to use the toilet, go a bit far, dig a 30 cm hole, and bury your waste. This helps protect the wild animals and the environment.
