Unlike Rwanda and South Sudan, where the use of drones is highly restricted, Uganda allows tourists to use them if done responsibly. Drones can be bought within Uganda or imported from outside, but the better option is to buy one in Uganda to save time and avoid extra shipping costs.
Kibale is a popular place known for its primates, and you are allowed to film animals like monkeys, bush babies, baboons, and chimpanzees, among others.
The rules for using drones in Uganda are almost the same as in Rwanda. However, in Uganda, you do not have to be a resident or citizen to apply for permission.
Uganda Drone Rules & Regulations for Kibale Forest
Below are some of the main rules you must follow:
- Avoid using drones in crowded places
- Respect other people’s privacy
- Do not fly drones near military or government buildings
To carry out filming in Kibale, a visitor must pay 40% of the chimpanzee permit fee and get a media card, which costs $175 per person. Additional fees apply for other activities like bird-watching, as Kibale is also known for its many bird species.
The best time to visit and use drones for filming is during the dry season, from June to October and December to March, when there is little or no rain. This gives clear visibility and firm ground for walking.
The wet season also has its advantages, as it helps plants grow and brings out the true colors of nature. These are the months of April, May, and November, though sighting can be unclear. Treks tend to be shorter during this time because chimpanzees do not move far in search of food, as it is available in plenty.

Kibale can be reached by road or air, depending on your budget. If using air transport, the journey starts from Entebbe Airport to Kajjansi Airfield and finally to Kasese Airstrip, where you transfer to Kibale. These flights are offered by domestic airlines such as AeroLink and Fly Uganda.
By road, you can travel from Entebbe to Fort Portal, which takes about 5 to 6 hours. You can also use the Mbarara–Kasese highway, then connect to Kibale Forest with a 1 to 2-hour drive.
Drones must be used with care to keep the wild animals calm and not cause them stress.
