Healthcare Facilities Near Kibale National Park – Hospitals in Fort Portal

If you feel sick, do not hesitate to visit hospitals near Kibale National Park, as they provide good health services to help you recover. Some of these hospitals are located in Fort Portal City, which covers both the Tooro Kingdom and Kabarole District.

The hospitals include Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital, which is the largest in this area. It is managed by the Uganda Ministry of Health and has over 300 beds. If you were prescribed certain medicine before traveling, please carry your medical documents for proper guidance. You can also get a check-up if you feel unwell during your trip.

Hospitals are always open to help the sick. That is why Holy Family Virika Hospital was built as the second-largest facility in the area, to reduce the pressure on Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital. It is a private hospital with 155 beds and was originally owned by John Edward Church of the Missionary Society.

Another hospital is Kabarole Missionary Hospital, which is managed by the Church of Uganda, though it was also started by John Edward Church of the Church Missionary Society. It is small but offers good medical services and handles patients with care.

There are also hospitals in Kampala, such as Mengo Hospital, a large hospital well equipped with medical machines to help everyone. The line may be long, but you will be treated—just make sure to arrive early.

Another hospital is Nsambya Hospital, also known as St. Francis Hospital. It is a welcoming place with knowledgeable medical staff. Before any check-up, you will first talk to a doctor, then go for tests. Note that it is a private hospital and may be a bit more expensive compared to Mulago Hospital, which is a public hospital run by the government.

Understanding all regulations for electronic devices is crucial; information on drones and their usage in Kibale National Park is available to help you prepare.

When heading to Kibale, take the Kampala–Mubende–Fort Portal road, which was tarmacked in 2007 and is still in good condition. It takes only four to five hours to reach your destination. One interesting part of the journey is the Mubende stopover, where you can fill up on petrol and buy food and drinks.

Make sure the food, such as roasted meat and chicken, is hot to protect your health. For drinks, buy only bottled juice, since some Ugandans do not boil water, saying they are immune to water-related diseases.

Above all, prevention is better than cure.
