Kanyanchu Sector is the starting point for tourist activities and is located in the central part of Kibale National Park. It is also known as the park’s headquarters and is popular for chimpanzee trekking. Before entering the forest, a briefing is given to prepare you for the trek.
Don’t worry if you miss one session—there are two trekking times each day. The morning session begins at 8:00 a.m., and the afternoon session starts at 2:00 p.m.
Each trek lasts between two to five hours, including one hour of observing and taking photos of the chimpanzees as they go about their daily activities.
Kibale National Park is home to many types of primates and is known worldwide as the “Capital of Primates.” With the help of a park ranger, who guides visitors through the forest, you may see not only chimpanzees but also birds, L’Hoest’s monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys, and more.
After the trek, visitors return to their booked accommodations. The nearest lodge to Kanyanchu Sector is Primate Lodge. It offers comfortable rooms and many useful services.
Sometimes, chimpanzees visit the lodge. If this happens, stay calm and avoid eye contact. There have been reports that chimpanzees may target sensitive parts of the human body, like the face and genitals, so it is important to observe them from a distance.
On the bright side, you get to see these great apes without entering the forest.

During the dry season, the weather is good, and all parts of the sector are easy to reach. However, prices are usually higher during this time due to the high number of visitors.
Before starting your trek, your documents will be checked at the Kanyanchu Centre to confirm that you qualify for the activity. You must also show your permit as proof of payment.
This permit is usually arranged by your tour company through the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
